DEXTER, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team opened its season with a five-kilometer race at the Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Michigan, on Friday morning (Sept. 2).

The Wolverines raced against the Detroit-Mercy Titans and finished with a sweep of the top five.

Junior Kayla Windemuller won the Michigan Open with a time of 17:06 with senior Ericka VanderLende finishing a few seconds behind Windemuller at 17:10. This duo picked up where they left off last season with their Big Ten finishes of 6th and 2nd respectively. Rounding out the top three was junior Katelynne Hart with a time of 17:27.3.

The Wolverines' next finisher was senior Samantha Saenz (17:31.1). The last finisher in the top five was freshman Samantha Hastie, who made her Michigan debut with a 17:52.0.

Vanderlende, Windemulller and Hart were the opening pack for the Maize and Blue with those three keeping the lead throughout the race.

All Wolverines in uniform or competing unattached finished under 21 minutes.

The Wolverines race again next Friday, Sept. 9, at the Big Ten Preview in Ann Arbor at the U-M Golf Course in preparation for the Big Ten Championships, which will also be hosted at the U-M Golf Course on Oct. 28.
