U-M Rolls Past Toledo in Home Opener at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team kicked off the Michigan Invitational with a win over Toledo in straight sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-12) at Cliff Keen Arena on Friday afternoon (Sept. 2).
Jess Mruzik led all players with ten kills, while Jacque Boney led all players with six blocks. Maddie Dowd recorded 31 assists, leading all players in that category. Hannah Grant led all players with 10 digs and provided three assists.
It was back and forth up through 7-7 in the first set before Dowd went on a 7-0 run at the service line recording one ace. The last three Wolverine points came by way of kills from Jess Robinson, Haley Hallgren and Mruzik to push U-M past the Rockets, 25-16.
Toledo kept the second set close only falling to U-M by three. Kendall Murray continued her dominance on the outside providing five kills for Michigan, including the final kill to take set two 25-22. Michigan recorded four service aces from Mruzik, Grant, Robinson and Murray throughout the set.
The name of the game in the final set was serving. Robinson went on an 11-0 serving frenzy to put Michigan up 12-1. The Wolverines had a lead as big as 14 before the Rockets cut it down to 10. Brooke Humphrey served out Michigan for the final two points to take the match 3-0.
The Wolverines outhit the Rockets over the course of the match, .345 to .069 while finishing with more blocks (14-2), kills (42-27), assists (36-22) and digs (31-29.)
Robinson, Boney and Serena Nyambio all hit above .700 throughout the match, collecting five or more kills. Boney came alive with eight kills and six blocks to help push Michigan past Toledo.
U-M will be back in action on Friday night (Sept. 2) at 7:30 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena when the Wolverines take on Morehead State.
