ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Nine total former, current and future members of the University of Michigan men's and women's swimming and diving teams -- including five alumni, two current and two incoming student-athletes-- recently competed at the FINA World Championships, held in Budapest, Hungary.
Alumnus Felix Auböck was the star of the show throughout the preliminaries, semifinals and finals in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle events. He finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 3:43.58 and fifth in the 200 with a time of 1:45.11.
Current Wolverine Gal Groumi picked up where he left off setting records, this time for his home country of Israel. Groumi shattered the national record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.79, finishing 15th overall. He bested that finish in the 200 individual medley with a 13th-place showing in 1:59.67.
Letitia Sim, competing for Singapore, swam in four events at the World Championships. She posted her best finish in the 100-meter breaststroke after swimming a 1:08.59 to finish 22nd. Sim posted top-30 results in the 200 IM (23rd, 2:16.30), 200 breast (24th, 2:31.31) and 50 breast (27th, 31.92), respectively.
Another alumnus, Charlie Swanson, swam his way into the semifinals of the 200 breaststroke finishing 11th overall with a time of 2:09.89. Maggie MacNeil helped Team Canada to a second-place finish in the 4x100 freestyle relay, swimming the third leg of the relay and recording a split of 53.27.
Gustavo Borges, who earlier this year went 22 seconds flat in the 50 free to earn a spot on the Brazilian National team, finished tied for 20th in Budapest with a time of 22.26, just off of his personal best.
Incoming freshmen, Yousuf Almatrooshi (United Arab Emirates) and Nikola Acin (Serbia), both posted solid times for their respective countries. Almatrooshi, who competed in the 100 free and the 100 butterfly, finished 49th in the 100 fly and 59th in the 100 free respectively. Acin helped Serbia to an eighth-place finish in the 4x100 freestyle relay. Given the honor to anchor the relay, he went 49.13 to cap off the relay.
