SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- With round best 76s from junior Hailey Borja and sophomore Monet Chun, the 20th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 310 second-round total Saturday (May 21) and is tied for 20th with a 611 36-hole total at the NCAA Finals being played at the Grayhawk Golf Club.
Starting the day tied for 12th following Friday's opening 301, the Wolverines teed off in the afternoon wave to start the second round. Unable to convert on its chances on the back nine, U-M dropped eight positions Saturday. With the 24-team field fighting for a top-15 first-cut spot, the Maize and Blue are eight shots back of No. 15 San Jose State (307-296/603) and No. 8 Virginia (304-299/603).
"There is a lot of golf to play, and a lot can happen on this golf course," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We've regrouped and will be ready to play Michigan golf tomorrow."
Beginning the day off the first tee of the afternoon wave, the Wolverines grinded their way through the front side making the turn six-over and maintaining a top-15 position. Borja and Chun led U-M's play as they both turned one-over, while junior Mikaela Schulz's seven pars had her two-over.
U-M highlighted those first nine holes, playing the par-5 7th at four-under as a team following a pair of birdies by Borja and graduate student Ashley Kim and an eagle from Chun. Following her strong drive, Chun's approach from 217 yards out landed within seven feet where she drained the putt for eagle.
Making the turn, U-M could not find a rhythm as missed chances added up throughout the backside and the Wolverines went 14-over to give them a 310 total on the day and 611 two-day total.
With her 76, Borja continues to lead U-M in a tie for 29th place with a 148 total (72-76). Senior Ashley Lau carded a 78 and dropped into a tie for 47th (72-78/150), while Chun's second-round 76 helped her move into a tie for 78th (77-76/153).
The Wolverines will start their third round Sunday at 12:36 p.m. MST (3:36 p.m. EDT) off the first tee with No. 6 Oklahoma State (307-300/607) and No. 16 Baylor (301-310/611).
