ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the announcement Thursday (May 19) of the qualifiers to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, the University of Michigan women's track and field team is set to be well-represented in the NCAA postseason with 18 entries.
Led by top-10 seeded Ziyah Holman (400 meters) and Ameia Wilson (long jump), the Wolverines will compete for NCAA Championships berths in 13 of the 20 events set to be contested next Wednesday through Saturday (May 25-28) hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Dating back to the start of the NCAA Preliminary Round system in 2011, this qualifying contingent is surpassed in scale only by the 20-entry delegation that competed at the 2021 edition of the meet.
The four-day competition, which features 48 qualifiers in each individual event and 24 teams in each relay, will serve as the opening rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore. The top-12 finishers in each event from the East Region -- in which Michigan competes -- and the top 12 from the West Region will comprise the 24-person fields at Oregon.
Holman may have been narrowly denied her fourth straight Big Ten title last weekend, but she will enter Bloomington looking for a return trip to nationals as the Wolverines' top-seeded entry at No. 5. She leads a sprints crew that also includes Big Ten scorer No. 13 Aasia Laurencin (100-meter hurdles) and U-M first-year record holder No. 20 Savannah Sutherland (400-meter hurdles), as well as the 4x400 relay that Holman anchors and the 4x100 relay.
Seeded ninth in the region, Big Ten scorer Wilson is aiming to qualify for her first NCAA meet. Joining her in the jumps events are the pole vault trio of No. 13 Brooke Tjerrild, No. 31 Mia Manson and No. 38 Jessica Mercier, as well as 25th-ranked triple jumper Riley Ammenhauser.
Big Ten silver medalist steeplechaser Kayla Windemuller is the top-ranked woman in the distance crew at No. 12. She will be joined in the endurance events by fellow steeplechase scorer Alice Hill, Big Ten champion Aurora Rynda (800 meters) and Sam Tran (1,500 meters).
The duo of Corinne Jemison and Amanda Schaare both qualified for the East Prelims in both the shot put and discus. Jemison will be seeded No. 14 and No. 19 in those events, respectively, while Schaare enters at No. 29 and 47.
This will mark the third straight edition of the East Prelims in which Rynda, Hill and Mercier will contest their respective events, and the second for Holman, Tran, Windemuller, Manson and Schaare. Laurencin competed in the NCAA West Prelims in 2021 before transferring from Texas, and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
