IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to seven, knocking off Maryland, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament Friday morning (April 29) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. U-M won the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches were completed to get the win.
Michigan grabbed the early lead, winning the doubles point behind a pair of victories at No. 3 and No. 2.
Michigan's No. 3 pair of Anca Craciun and Nicole Hammond were broken at 2-1 in the early stages of their match but were able to break right back. It was all Michigan from there, as Hammond and Craciun won the final five games of the match to get the 6-2 win.
Andrea Cerdan and Kari Miller clinched the doubles point for the Maize and Blue with a 6-3 win at No. 2. Much like the match at No. 3, Miller and Cerdan found themselves down a break at 2-1 before going to work. They immediately broke back, igniting a run of four straight games for a 5-2 advantage. After Maryland held at 5-3, the Wolverines came through in the next game when Cerdan's forehand down the line set up a Miller volley winner at the net for the 1-0 team lead.
Julia Fliegner staked the Wolverines a 2-0 lead behind a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5. She got the break she needed in the first set at 3-2, backing it up in the next game for a 4-2 lead. Fliegner won the remaining two games to grab control of the match. She raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second and cashed in on her third match point for Michigan's second point of the afternoon.
Jaedan Brown quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win of her own at No. 2 for a 3-0 Michigan lead. Her match followed a similar scrip to Fliegner's win, with Brown getting a first-set break at 3-2 en route to the 6-2 win. Brown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and kept her break with a win at 4-2. She won the remaining two games to give Michigan a 3-0 lead.
Maryland countered with a win at No. 3 to trim Michigan's lead to 3-1. When it was all said and done, Michigan took four first sets with Miller grinding out a 9-7 tiebreak win at No. 1 after the match at No. 3 was over.
Cerdan put up the deciding point for Michigan, getting a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win at No. 4. After breezing to a first-set win, Cerdan was up 2-0 in the second before the set got back on serve at 2-2. It stayed on serve the rest of the way, as Cerdan held to stay in the set at 5-4 and then again to send it to a breaker at 6-5.
Cerdan grabbed a 3-1 lead in the breaker but dropped two straight points for a 3-3 tie at the changeover. The two exchanged points before Cerdan won two straight for a 6-4 lead. Maryland fought off one match point but double faulted on the next as U-M wrapped up the 4-1 win.
With the win, Michigan advances to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. U-M will face either Northwestern or Nebraska tomorrow (Saturday, April 30) at 10 a.m. CT.
