IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to four by winning the doubles point and breezing to three straight-set wins in a 4-0 victory over Iowa on Sunday afternoon (April 17) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Michigan grabbed control of the match early, taking the doubles point behind wins at No. 2 and No. 1.
Following three straight breaks of serve at No. 2, Michigan's duo of Kari Miller and Andrea Cerdan grabbed a 3-1 lead as Cerdan went back to serve. She held as Michigan backed up the break for a 4-1 lead, with U-M breaking Iowa again in the next game for a 5-1 advantage. Iowa saved two match points on Michigan's next service game, but U-M converted on its third in the next game as Iowa netted a forehand.
Michigan's No. 1 pair of Jaedan Brown and Julia Fliegner also took a 3-1 lead but Iowa countered with two straight games to tie the match at 3-3. Iowa double faulted on game point in the next game, giving Michigan a 4-3 lead. That was all the Wolverines needed as they won the next two games to wrap up a 6-3 win for the doubles point.
Brown put up Michigan's second point of the day in her first-ever appearance at the No. 1 spot. It was all Brown in her first set as she raced out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back in a 6-1 win. She converted on her second set point, ripping a forehand down the line to get the win. She again used a fast start in the second for a 5-0 lead before dropping a pair of games for a 5-2 advantage. Brown made good on her fifth match point of the day, winning a 6-1, 6-2 match for a 2-0 U-M lead.
Miller was responsible for Michigan's third point of the match behind a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2. Miller got the break she needed at 4-2 in the first before holding at love in the next game. She broke at 4-2 in the first set to ignite a three-game run for a 6-2 win, and it was all Miller in the second as she held at love in the final game for a 6-1 victory.
Gala Mesochoritou clinched the match for the Maize and Blue behind a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 6. With the first set tied at 3-3, Mesochoritou came through with the break and then held on a deuce point when Bacalla netted a forehand for a 5-3 lead. She converted on her second set point for a 6-3 first-set win. After that, it was all Mesochoritou as she lost just one game in the second for the straight-set win.
Michigan is set to complete the regular season next weekend with a pair of matches at home. First up for the Maize and Blue is a Friday match (April 22) against Illinois, set for 4 p.m.
