PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Five members of the University of Michigan ice hockey team have been named to the USA World Junior Championship preliminary roster, it was announced on Monday (Dec. 5).
Gavin Brindley, Seamus Casey, Dylan Duke, Luke Hughes and Rutger McGroarty have been named to the 32-man roster and are set to report to the USA Hockey training camp on Sunday, Dec. 11. The camp will run Dec. 12-17 -- with a final 23-play roster announced at the conclusion of camp.
The 2023 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship will be held Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Moncton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The US was shutout of medal contention this past August as the 2022 World Juniors was played after being canceled in January due to COVID-19.
Hughes was on that August team, leading the squad in time on ice with an average of 22:02. In five games, he scored six points with one goal and five assists and finished a +7.
The US has medaled five times in the last seven years -- including gold in 2021 and 2017, silver in 2019 and bronze in 2018 and 2016.
In total, Michigan players have earned 20 medals with USA Hockey at the World Juniors since 1980.
