HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Graduate student Jack Medley earned a fifth-place finish at 125 pounds to headline the University of Michigan wrestling team's entrants at the 58th annual Midlands Championships on Friday (Dec. 30) at NOW Arena.
Medley went 6-2 over the two-day competition and earned five bonus wins, picking up a forfeit win in the fifth-place bout. He bounced back from a narrow second-round loss to reel off four straight wins in the wrestlebacks, including a 12-3 major decision over Indiana's Jacob Moran with three takedowns, a four-point leg turk in the first period and 3:12 in riding-time advantage.
It was Medley's second straight tournament placement. He captured the 125-pound title at the Cleveland State Open on Dec. 11 before the holiday break. He is now 10-5 on the season.
Freshman Rylan Rogers also went 2-2 at 184 pounds, while freshman Nathan Jerore and sophomore/freshman Dzhabrail Khurshidov competed at 141 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
The Wolverines will resume their dual-meet slate next weekend with a pair of competitions in the Golden State. U-M will face Cal Poly at 7 p.m. PST on Friday, Jan. 6 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., before taking on CSU Bakersfield at noon PST on Sunday, Jan. 8 in Bakersfield, Calif.
