LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Matthew and Nicole Lester family defensive coordinator Jesse Minter of the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan football team was announced on Monday (Nov. 28) as one of five finalists for the 2022 Broyles Award presented by the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation. The award honors college football's top assistant coach and was established in 1996 to recognize legendary head football coach Frank Broyles.
Minter is the eighth Wolverine assistant to be named a finalist for the award. This is Minter's first time being named a finalist. The other four coaches named finalists are Todd Monken (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks, Georgia), Ryan Walters (defensive coordinator, Illinois), Garrett Riley (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks, TCU), and Alex Golesh (offensive coordinator/tight ends, Tennessee).
The Wolverines are 12-0 for the fourth time in program history and have matched a single-season record with 12 wins this year. U-M lists in the top 12 nationally in eight areas including total defense (second), scoring defense, rushing defense, pass efficiency defense (third), first downs allowed (fourth), fourth down conversion rate allowed (fifth), passing yards per game allowed (11th) and third down conversion rate allowed (12th).
In the win at Ohio State last weekend, Minter's defense helped secure the largest margin of victory (+32 points) in the rivalry since a 22-0 shutout in 1976.
Eight of U-M's opponents have been held to 14 points or less this season and opponents have totaled 15 touchdowns against the U-M defense in 12 games. The defense has forced 46 three-and-outs on the year.
Under Minter's direction, the defense has kept nine of 12 opponents under 300 yards of total offense and no team has run for 150 yards against the Wolverines this year. Five opponents have failed to hit the 75-yard threshold on the ground.
The five finalists will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas, where the winner will be announced at the Broyles Award Ceremony on Tuesday, December 6.
Michigan plays for the Big Ten championship on Saturday, Dec. 3. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. on Fox.
