ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Senior Ericka VanderLende and senior Sam Tran of the University of Michigan women's cross country team received All-Big Ten accolades on Wednesday (Nov. 2). VanderLende earned first team honors and the Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, while Tran was named second eam all-conference.
VanderLende earned her third first-team nod after her third-place finish in 20:13.6 at the Big Ten Championships at U-M Golf Course. The honor is her third first-team honor, with the others coming in 2019 and 2021. Michigan did not compete in the 2020 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
Prior to racing at Big Tens, VanderLende ran three other times this year finishing as one of the Wolverines' top-two runners in two of those races. She did not race for a month but was able to return for an impressive showing at the conference championships.
Tran finished 10th overall at the Big Ten Championships to earn All-Big Ten second-team honors. She was consistent this year all season, finishing as one of Michigan's top-three runners in its four 6K races so far. She has continually improved her times throughout the year, dropping more than 40 seconds from the Big Ten Preview Meet to the Championships which were both run at U-M Golf Course. This is Tran's second All-Big Ten honor, as she was named Cross Country Freshman of the Year for the 2020-21 season.
