
Wolverines Finish Second at Big Ten Championships Behind VanderLende, Tran

ANN ARBOR, Mich -- The No. 26-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team got a pair of top-10 finishes from seniors Ericka VanderLende and Sam Tran. leading the Wolverines to a second-place showing (86 points) at the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Oct. 28) at U-M Golf Course.
Michigan State (78 points) won the race, with No. 17 Wisconsin (94), No. 22 Ohio State (104) and No. 29 Northwestern (116) finishing third through fifth, respectively.
VanderLende finished in third place and was the first U-M runner across the finish line in a time of 20:13.6, behind Addie Engel of Ohio State and Katie Osika of Michigan State. VanderLende got off to a quick start and was third after the first mile, worked her way up to first place, but fell back over the final two miles.
After a slower start, Tran climbed 23 places over the course of the 6,000 meters to finish tenth in 20:29.1. Fifth-year Samantha Saenz ran a career best time of 20:47.3, coming in as Michigan's third runner and 22nd overall. The Wolverines saw two consecutive runners finish in 25th and 26th, with junior Katelynne Hart and fifth-year Kayla Windemuller separated by two seconds, finishing in 20:56.2 and 20:58.8, respectively.
This race also saw a career best time of 21:02.2 from sophomore Samantha Hastie, who finished 31st overall, good for the Wolverines sixth runner.
With the conference meet now complete, U-M's focus now shifts to national competition. In two weeks (Friday, Nov. 11), the Wolverines will be in Terre Haute, Ind., for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
