SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 setback at the hands of Notre Dame on Tuesday evening (Oct. 25) in a non-conference contest at Alumni Field.
The Wolverines took the lead twice in the match, but two late goals from the Fighting Irish locked up the non-conference victory.
Freshman Nicholas Kaloukian tallied for the fourth straight match, opening the scoring on the evening, while Christian Pulselli netted his second goal of the season. Cameron Martin and Nicholas Cassiday added assists for Michigan (4-9-3). Junior goalkeeper Ethan Wood made a career-high six saves in goal.
Wood stepped up early to keep the game scoreless with a big save to his right side before Oliver Martin got off a shot that went just high of the crossbar in the 10th minute. Michigan continued to pressure when it had opportunities. Bryce Blevins put a corner kick inside the 18-yard box that bounced to the feet of Cassiday, whose shot was saved by the Notre Dame keeper and the follow-up from Martin went just wide of the left post in the in the 18th minute.
The Wolverines broke open the scoring when Michael Leon brought the ball down the left side of the field and got it over to Cameron Martin, who took one step and passed it to Kaloukian. He fired the ball through three defenders into the far bottom-left corner of the goal to put U-M up 1-0 going into the halftime break.
The Fighting Irish came out of halftime with a burst in offensive pressure with two set pieces 20-yards out before they found the equalizer in the 62nd minute. The Wolverines wasted little time responding less than a minute later when Cassiday placed a ball six yards out that bounced around for Pulselli to bury into the back of the net and swing the lead back into Michigan's hands.
For the second time in the match, Notre Dame (8-6-1) tied the score off a rebound in the 84th minute and tacked on the go-ahead goal a minute later. Michigan had no answer for the back-to-back Fighting Irish goals as it fell in the road match.
The Wolverines close out the 2022 regular season Sunday (Oct. 30) when they welcome Penn State for a 1 p.m. contest at U-M Soccer Stadium. Michigan will honor its 11 seniors prior to the match, with the contest set to be streamed live on B1G+.
