ATLANTA, Ga. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won four of the final five singles matches on court to rally for a 4-3 win over No. 12-ranked Georgia Tech in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off on Sunday (Jan. 30) at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
Facing a 3-2 deficit, Michigan got three-set wins from Julia Fliegner at No. 5 and Andrea Cerdan at No. 3 to complete the comeback.
U-M fell behind early, dropping the doubles point and a straight-set decision at No. 6 for a 2-0 deficit.
The Wolverines answered quickly, getting straight-set wins from Kari Miller at No. 1 and Jaedan Brown at No. 4 to knot the team match at 2-2.
Miller went up a break at 4-2 in the first set at the top spot, breezing to the 6-3 win. It was all Miller in the second set as she again grabbed an early break to coast to the win over No. 69-ranked Ava Hrastar.
Brown tied the match at 2-2 moments later behind a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 4. The first set was a back-and-forth affair, as Brown grabbed a 5-3 lead before dropping two straight games for a 5-5 tie. Brown buckled down and won the next two games, grabbing a 7-5 win. Brown eased to a 6-1 win in the second set for Michigan's second point.
U-M dropped first sets in the remaining three matches on court and needed to force third sets to stay in the match.
Georgia Tech pushed its lead to 3-2 behind a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 as Michigan needed to take both remaining matches for the win.
Fliegner put Michigan's third point on the board, rallying for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Rosie Garcia Gross at No. 5. After dropping her first set, Fliegner jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second and kept the break the rest of the way in the 6-3 win.
Fliegner raced out to a 3-1 lead in the third set, but Georgia Tech answered by winning three straight games to go up a break at 4-3. The Wolverine freshman quickly countered, winning three straight games of her own to get the win.
With attention turning to No. 3 as the only remaining match on court, Cerdan was up a break at 3-1 in the third. The two players kept exchanging breaks until Cerdan held for a 6-3 win. In her final service game, she jumped out to a 40-0 lead before Georgia Tech fought off a pair of match points. Cerdan converted on the third, putting Michigan's fourth point on the board.
