ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up its second shutout of the day, blanking Oakland 7-0 on Saturday evening (Jan. 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M got a 7-0 win over Western Michigan earlier in the day.
U-M again got off to a fast start in doubles, winning the first point behind victories at No. 1 and No. 2.
Julia Fliegner and Andrea Cerdan picked up their first win of the season, cruising to a 6-0 victory at the top spot. It did not take much longer for Michigan to put the point away as Anca Craciun and Nicole Hammond came through with a 6-1 victory at No. 2. Both matches followed a similar script, as both U-M teams grabbed the break at 2-0 before cruising to victory.
Gala Mesochoritou was the first Wolverine off court in singles action after a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. Mesochoritou got the break at 2-1 in the first set and did not drop a game the rest of the way in her second victory of the day.
Moments later, Jaedan Brown came through with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 right next to Mesochoritou. The teammates held concurrent match points, quickly pushing Michigan's lead to 3-0.
Craciun clinched the match for the Maize and Blue with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5. Between her two matches of the day, Craciun dropped just two games.
Hammond, playing her first career match at No. 1 singles, accounted for Michigan's fifth point of the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win. She raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first set for the win. In the second, she got an opportune break at 5-4 before serving out the match in the next game.
Lanie Van Linge got her first singles win in a dual match, rallying for a 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (4) win at No. 6. After she cruised to the second-set win to force the 10-point tiebreaker, Van Linge used a fast start to put it away. She won the first three points of the breaker and never let her lead shrink below three points to get the victory.
Fliegner kept the Wolverines perfect on the day behind a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3. Fliegner found herself down 3-1 to start the second set before mounting a comeback for the straight-set win. She went up a break at 5-4 and served out the match in the next game, moving to 2-0 in singles on the day.
