ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite dominating the second-half attack and putting three shots on goal in the closing minutes, the University of Michigan men's soccer team fell 1-0 to an experienced No. 12-ranked New Hampshire squad Friday evening (Sept. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines (2-2-1) were inches away from finding the tying goal in the final minutes of play as they allowed UNH just one chance in the second half offensively. Michigan had tallied 10 shots, tying the most of any team against the Wildcats this season, putting three on frame.
Junior Evan Rasmussen led U-M with two shots on net, while Austin Swiech had one reach net. In goal, Hayden Evans earned his third start of the season and made four saves on the evening.
Michigan had some early chances when Kevin Buca got his head on a cross that sailed just high in the 16th minute and Swiech had a shot inside the 18-yard box that went wide of the net.
New Hampshire (5-0-0) earned back-to-back corners, and a loose ball in the box found its way to an open Wildcat, who capitalized to score the first goal of the game in the 38th minute and sent U-M into the locker room at halftime trailing 1-0.
Evans came up with backs-to-back saves, including coming out and diving onto a shot that was ripped inside the 18-yard box in the 55th minute.
The Wolverines put together a pair of chances as Swiech fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box and Rasmussen got the rebound and put a second straight shot on frame. The Wildcats cleared the ensuing corner and maintained its 1-0 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in the second half.
Michigan continued to knock on the door offensively, as Rasmussen had two shots on net, one that was just barely saved by the keeper's hands in the upper-third of the net with five minutes to play.
With four minutes remaining, Buca took another shot and the Wolverines earned a corner with just seconds on the clock, but the shot from Uriel Zeitz went just wide of the left post, ending the contest.
Michigan will be back in action Monday (Sept. 13) when it hosts Chicago State at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
