
Dent, Canada Finish Sixth; Collier-Hezel, USA Fifth at U23 World Championships

University of Michigan rowing rising sophomore Abigail Dent (Team Canada, BW2x) and rising junior Elena Collier-Hezel (Team USA, BW4+) are in competition at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Racice, Czech Republic. Competition begins Wednesday (July 7) and concludes on Sunday (July 11).
Sunday, July 11: Dent, Canada Sixth in BW2x B Final
In the B Final for the BW2x, Abigail Dent and the Canadian boat placed sixth in a time of 7:32.61. Lithuania was the victor of the B Final in 7:16.86 while the Netherlands were the winners of the A Final and the event. The Germans (silver) and Greeks (bronze) rounded out the medalists in the A Final.
The Canadian boat finished 2.68 seconds behind fifth-place Argentina. In a crowded field, it was a strong showing to have made the B Final in Dent's first U23 World Championships experience.

Saturday, July 10: Collier-Hezel, USA Finish Fifth in BW4+ Final; Dent, Canada on to BW2x B Final
In the first final of the competition weekend, Romania was crowned gold-medal winners in the BW4+ event, winning in 7:12.79. Elena Collier-Hezel and the U.S. 4+ retained their placement from the preliminary race, finishing fifth overall in 7:26.63, ahead of Ukraine and directly behind the Czech Republic. Behind Romania, Germany (silver) and Italy (bronze) were medal winners.
In the BW2x A/B semifinals, the top three boats in each race were to advance to the A Final. Abigail Dent and the Canadian BW2x finished sixth in 7:29.91. The Netherlands won the semifinal with Greece and Belarus in second and third, respectively.
Dent and the Canadian BW2x will close out the weekend of competition with the B Final Sunday (July 11) at 3:40 a.m. EDT.
Friday, July 9: Dent, Canada Finish Third in Repechage to Advance to A/B Semis
Racing in the double sculls reps, Abigail Dent and the Canadian BW2x claimed third place in their morning race to advance to the A/B semifinal. Finishing 4.26 seconds behind second-place Switzerland, the Canadians needed to hold top-three positioning to stay alive in the hunt for the A final, and they did just that, holding off Slovakia (fourth place, 7:23.04) to place third in 7:20.59.
The A/B semifinals will be held Saturday (July 10) in two heats at 5:18 and 5:25 a.m. EDT, respectively.
Thursday, July 8: Collier-Hezel Advances to Final, Dent to Repechage
In the morning prelims for the BW4+, Elena Collier-Hezel and the American four rowed to a fifth-place finish in their heat of six with a time of 7:19.15. The U.S. boat was comfortably ahead of the sixth-place Ukraine boat and about 4.2 seconds behind the third- and fourth-place boats, the Czech Republic (7:14.95) and Romania (7:14.99), respectively. Italy won the heat in 7:11.60.
With no semifinals and only enough entries for one final, all boats advance to Saturday's A Final at 3:05 a.m. EDT.
In the heats round of BW2x, Abigail Dent and the Canadian double sculls raced in the third heat of three. They missed a bid to A/B semifinals with a fifth-place finish in their heat, timing 7:25.23 to edge out Switzerland in sixth. The boat from Italy was fourth (7:16.83) and the Dutch boat won the heat in 7:08.51.
Dent will race again in the repechage on Friday morning at 3:45 a.m. EDT. The field includes Switzerland, as well as boats from Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia, and the U.S. A top-three finish will grant entry to the A/B semifinals on Saturday.
