ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Joel Harrison of the University of Michigan men's soccer team was named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America first team and senior Marc Ybarra earned second-team honors as the achievements were announced Monday (July 5) by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Harrison is a repeat Academic All-America selection, having earned second-team honors in 2019. Most recently named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for the second time in his career, Harrison also is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. Other academic achievements include being a three-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement recipient.
On the pitch, Harrison is a first team All-Big Ten Conference defenseman. He started and played in seven games this season before a season-ending injury on March 27 in a match vs. Indiana. In 2019, Harrison played nearly every minute in 19 games, scored one goal and helped to hold opponents to a 0.79 goals-against average.
A 2021 MLS SuperDraft pick of the Vancouver Whitecaps, Harrison will return to Michigan in the fall, utilizing the NCAA-issued extra year of eligibility.
He is just the third Wolverine in program history to earn first-team honors, joining Matt Niemeyer (2004) and Ivo Cerda (2017 and 2018).
A finalist for the 2021 Senior CLASS Award, Ybarra is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a two-time winner of U-M Athletic Academic Achievement awards.
Ybarra, the 2021 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, is a two-time All-Big Ten selection and an all-region player. This season, he started in all 11 matches and led the team in scoring with 10 points with a team-best six assists and two goals. In his Michigan career thus far, Ybarra has earned 73 caps and has 34 points.
