ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Alumnus Sam Mikulak and graduate student Cameron Bock of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team secured tickets to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games at the United States Olympic Trials Saturday (June 26) at The Dome at American's Center. Mikulak earned a spot on the four-person team, while Bock was named one of five replacement athletes who will also travel to the Games.
Mikulak placed fourth in the two-day all-around competition (166.750), notched the top score on floor exercise with a 29.300 across both days of competition Thursday and Saturday, and took second on high bar with a score of 28.600. The appearance in Toyko will be his third Olympic Games.
Bock placed 10th in the all-around (163.300) but was mainly selected as a replacement athlete due to his fifth-place finish on pommel horse (27.700) and fourth-place finishes on parallel bars (28.300) and high bar (27.300).
Also competing was rising junior Paul Juda, who took eighth in the all-around with a 164.600. His best finish was sixth on two events, floor exercise (28.350) and parallel bars (28.200). All finishers above him were either named to the main team or as replacement athletes.
Mikulak and Bock will join former Wolverine Uche Eke (Nigeria) at the Tokyo Games.
Overall, U-M has had 15 men's gymnasts qualify for the Olympics since 1956.
The men's gymnastics competition at the Olympics is scheduled to take place on July 24 (qualification), July 26 (team final), July 28 (all-around final) and Aug. 1-3 (event finals).
