ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Graduate student Chiara Lommer and freshman Kari Miller of the University of Michigan women's tennis team each earned All-Big Ten honors after helping Michigan to the 2021 Big Ten championship, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon (May 3).
Lommer grabs her second all-conference honor after earning recognition during the 2017-18 season. The lefty compiled a 14-5 overall singles record, going 12-4 in dual matches at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 spots. She became the 10th Wolverine in program history to win at least 100 singles matches, as she currently sits eighth all-time with 104 wins. Her .698 singles winning percentage is also good for 13th in program history. Lommer was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week one time this past season, giving her two weekly honors for her career.
Miller, who is ranked No. 50 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), was a unanimous pick to the All-Big Ten team, competing at the top of the lineup for Michigan all season. She compiled a 15-4 overall singles record, including a 12-4 mark in dual matches. She went 11-3 at the No. 1 spot, with a 1-1 record at No. 2. Miller earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors once this season after clinching Michigan's win at No. 8 Ohio State (Feb. 28) with a three-set win over Irina Cantos Siemers, who is currently ranked No. 15 in singles. Miller also was named to the all-tournament team at this past weekend's Big Ten Tournament after helping Michigan to a runner-up finish.
Freshman Merri Kelly was Michigan's Sportsmanship Award winner. Kelly features a 6-2 overall singles record and a 3-2 dual-match record at No. 6.
Michigan will learn its NCAA Tournament fate later this evening during the NCAA selection show, set for 6 p.m. on NCAA.com
