ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team saw its postseason run come to an end in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16, falling to No. 5 seed Pepperdine, 4-0, Sunday afternoon (May 16) at the USTA National Campus.
Michigan's 2021 season was highlighted by 19 wins, a Big Ten championship, its ninth trip to the Sweet 16 since 2010 and a pair of All-Big Ten players in graduate student Chiara Lommer and freshman Kari Miller. Miller will represent Michigan in the NCAA Singles Championship that starts next week (May 23-28).
Pepperdine took the early lead, winning the doubles point behind victories at No. 1 and No. 3. The Waves used a strong start at No. 1 in a 6-2 win, while winning the final six games in a 6-4 victory at No. 3.
Pepperdine took five first sets, with senior Alyvia Jones winning Michigan's lone first set behind a 6-4 win at No. 5. The set stayed on serve throughout until Jones broke Lisa Zaar in the final game, ripping a forehand on the deuce point that Zaar put in the net.
Pepperdine wrapped up straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to extend its lead to 3-0.
At No. 2, Lommer was down a set and 5-1 in the second when she was able to win two straight games, including fighting off a match point, to stay on court as Michigan looked to put a point up on the board. Jones took a 5-1 lead in her second set at the same time at No. 5, but ran out of time as Lommer fought off three match points before falling to No. 21 Jessica Failla to seal the Pepperdine win.
The match marked the end of their Michigan careers for Lommer, Jones and Bella Lorenzini. Each of them clinched a Big Ten title during their career, with Lommer clinching the 2018 Big Ten Tournament, Jones clinching the 2019 Big Ten Tournament and Lorenzini clinching Michigan's Big Ten championship this season.
