MAINEVILLE, Ohio -- A second-round 70 (-2) from junior Ashley Lau and a career-low-tying 70 (-2) from junior Sophia Trombetta, the No. 22-ranked and No. 2-seeded University of Michigan women's golf team tallied a season-low 284 (-4) Saturday (April 24) and maintained its third-place position with a 573 (-2) 36-hole total at the Big Ten Championships at TPC River's Bend.
The Wolverines are seven shots back of co-leaders Michigan State (286-281, -9) and Maryland (287-280) with 567 (-9) totals. The trio will be paired with each other for the final 18 holes on Sunday (April 25) at 10:18 a.m. off the first tee.
"It was another great team effort today," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We converted lots of birdies and finished four-under on a difficult weather day. We have put ourselves in the final pairing and cannot wait for tomorrow's final round. It will be a tough day, but we're ready for the challenge."
Getting off to another strong start, the Wolverines produced 15 birdies on the front side, led by Lau's five, including a run of four straight on Nos. 6-9. However, Michigan State countered with 10 of its own, and Maryland had 10 and two eagles on the front side to keep the Wolverines in the third spot.
After a bogey on the 10th, Lau rattled off eight straight pars to post her fourth consecutive sub-par round with a 70 (-2), which moved her up two spots to a tie for third individually with a 141 (-3) total. Celebrating her 21st birthday, Trombetta used three front-nine birdies to make the turn at two-under. After playing the back side even, she tied her career-low with a 70 (-2) and moved up 10 positions to a tie for 14th at 144 (E).
Freshman Monet Chun, who is tied for eighth at 143 (-1), used three birdies to negate her three bogeys and post and even-par 72, while sophomore Hailey Borjas's four birdies erased her two double-bogeys as she was even at 72 as well. She is tied for 22nd at 147 (+3).
Those four tallies helped U-M post a season-low 284 (-4) team total, but the Terrapins used a 280 (-8) and the Spartans had a 281 (-7) to push its lead to seven strokes.
