
Michigan Concludes Season with Loss at No. 1 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team wrapped up its amended 2021 season, falling 3-0 to No. 1-ranked Wisconsin on Friday (April 2) at U-W Field House.
Sophomores May Pertofsky and Jess Robinson each led U-M offensively with identical stat lines of eight kills on 21 attempts (.286). Freshman Scottee Johnson boasted 20 assists, while classmate Hannah Grant collected 15 digs.

In the first set, Michigan (4-9, 4-9 Big Ten) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then led 3-1, but a Wisconsin run brought the count to 13-8. Michigan began to claw back with consecutive points that made the score 16-10, but the Badgers ran the score to 20-12. Michigan rattled off consecutive points to cut the deficit to 20-14 and later cut the score to five at 23-18, but Wisconsin pulled away to take the set 25-20.
In the second set, U-M sat tied with the Badgers at 3-3, but Wisconsin (15-0, 15-0 Big Ten) ripped off five straight points to lead 8-3. U-M cut the count to 8-5, but that was as close as the Wolverines came the rest of the set as the Badgers took a 25-14 win.
The Badgers closed out the straight-set win in the third, but U-M kept it close for the majority of the set. A kill from Johnson made it 5-3 Badgers, and Wisconsin then moved on to a 10-4 lead. However, U-M later put together five consecutive points to bring the score to 12-10, keyed by a service ace from junior Paige Jones. Trailing 18-13, U-M registered three of the next four points to cut the deficit to four at 20-16. Later in the set, consecutive kills from Pertofsky brought the score to 22-18. However, the Badgers ratlled off three straight points to take the set by a 25-18 score.
Michigan hit .168, while Wisconsin hit .313.
