Michigan Places Second in NCAA Qualifier to Advance to NCAA Finals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The second-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Finals with a 411.455 team score to place second in the NCAA Qualifier on Friday (April 16), hosted by the University of Minnesota at Maturi Pavilion.
Senior Cameron Bock won pommel horse and still rings, while sophomore Paul Juda won high bar to cap off U-M's event wins on the night.
U-MÂ started the night on pommel horse, and marked a 67.665. U-M swept the top-three spots in the session, and was led by Bock in first with a 14.166. Sophomore Markus Shears (14.033) also broke the 14-plateau to place second and Juda placed third with a 13.900. U-M totaled a 67.665 in the first rotation. After one rotation, U-M sat in third place, nearly six points behind Stanford.
On still rings in the second rotation, Michigan scored a 69.264, led by an event win from Bock. Senior James Read scored a 14.166, while Juda added a 14.066. U-M had a 206.194 after and trailed Stanford by 4.5 points.
With a solid mark of 70.065 on vault in the third rotation, U-M crept within 1.751 points of Stanford for first in the session. U-M used a 14.633 from Juda and a 14.333 from sophomore Casey Cummings and competed without lineup regular Bock, who sat out the event in anticipation of Saturday's finals.
On parallel bars in the fourth rotation, the Wolverines scored a 68.598, just off the season-high of 68.800. Bock scored a 14.266, Juda followed with a 14.266, and freshman Evgeny Siminiuc chipped in a 14.300. After four events, U-M trailed first-place Stanford (275.529) by 3.9 points.
The Maize and Blue then moved to high bar, where it was forced to count a fall but still scored a 66.598 to close the gap with Stanford. U-M had a running total of 343.890, 1.79 points behind the Cardinal with one rotation left. U-M was on floor exercise while the Cardinal were on still rings.
On floor exercise, Read led off with a 14.133 to surpass his career high. Senior Jacob Moore followed with a 14.266 to lead the Wolverines, while sophomore Adam Wooten matched Read with a 14.133 of his own. In all, U-M surpassed its season average with a 69.262 and scored a 411.455 as a team, but was unable to catch Stanford, which won the session with a 413.855.
In all, nine Wolverines made their NCAA debuts on the night.

The NCAA Finals are set for Saturday (April 17) at 7 p.m. CDT inside Maturi Pavilion. The Wolverines will begin the meet on pommel horse once again.
