ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Sophomore Paul Juda of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, the conference announced Monday (March 29).
Juda, a two-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honoree in 2021, has captured 13 event titles this year and is the top-ranked all-around gymnast in the country, with a national qualifying average of 86.167.
He is also ranked No. 1 nationally on high bar (14.367), No. 1 in the Big Ten on parallel bars (14.617), and second in the league on floor exercise (14.533), still rings (14.300) and pommel horse (14.250). Juda is third in the Big Ten in vault (14.683).
The Big Ten Gymnast of the Year honor is the eighth in U-M team history dating back to the formation of the award in the 1988 season. The last Wolverine to earn Gymnast of the Year was Sam Mikulak, who captured his third career honor in 2014. Juda was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year a season ago.
In terms of season-high scores, Juda owns the top mark in the nation in the all-around with his 86.500 on Jan. 17 against UIC, while his score of 14.550 on high bar against Minnesota on March 14 is also the top mark in the country. He shares the top rings score with his 14.500 against Illinois and Nebraska on Feb. 21.
A member of the U.S. Senior National Team, Juda helped the No. 2-ranked Wolverines wrap up the 2021 Big Ten regular-season championship with a perfect 6-0 record. Michigan is the top-ranked conference team heading into the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (April 3) in Lincoln, Neb.
