
Michigan Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to No. 7 Indiana

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered a harsh 1-0 (2OT) defeat to No. 7 Indiana on Saturday (March 27) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines had dominating spells of possession (56 percent) and outshot the Hoosiers (10-5), but the golden goal came 34 seconds into the second overtime period through Ryan Wittenbrink.
The Wolverines dominated possession in the first half (65 percent) and held the Hoosiers without a shot. The home side had two legitimate chances in the opening 45 minutes. In the 26th minute, junior Kevin Buca forced an Indiana turnover deep in the offensive third and connected with sophomore Inaki Rodriguez on a nice one-two. Rodriguez brought the ball down inside the box and went lot with a shot, but Indiana goalkeeper Roman Celentano was there to make the save.
Three minutes later, the Wolverines had a free-kick opportunity 30 yards from goal. Senior Marc Ybarra stepped up to take it, but his chance was gloved down by Celentano. The two sides were scoreless at the break.
Each team's goalkeepers made fantastic saves to deny sure goals in the second half. In the 61st minute, sophomore Owen Finnerty made a sprawling save to deny Indiana's Victor Bezerra at close range. Just over a minute later, Ybarra attempted to slot a shot into the corner, but Celentano stopped it. The two teams played to extra time.
After seeing out a free kick and successive corner kicks in the first half of the first overtime, Michigan went on the offensive, pinning the Hoosiers in their own box. Sophomore Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi -- who earned his first career start on Saturday -- played a beautiful sequence with junior Cameron Martin. His shot forced a good save for Celentano, who parried the ball out for a corner.
Despite the pressure, the Wolverines could not find a way through. Wittenbrink scored for the Hoosiers, ending the match 34 seconds into the second overtime.
Finnerty made two saves in goal.
The Wolverines turn their attention to next Wednesday (March 31) when they welcome rival Ohio State to U-M Soccer Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
