
Borges Guides Michigan to Podium Finishes on Day Two of NCAAs

» After two days at the NCAA Championships, U-M is in ninth place.
» Two swimmers scored in the 50-yard freestyle, including an All-America swim from Luiz Gustavo Borges, who was fifth. Cam Peel was 16th.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Luiz Gustavo Borges made the podium in the 50-yard freestyle and anchored the 400-yard medley relay to All-America honors, helping pace the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on the second day of the NCAA Championships on Thursday (March 25) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. After two days of competition, the Wolverines sit in ninth place (63 points).
Michigan came into the day seeded to score 41 points, but actually outperformed those expectations, scoring 51 points. The big jump came in the 50-yard freestyle where Borges, who came into the week ranked 22nd, moved all the way up into the 'A' final, finishing fifth with a new personal best (19.02). Sophomore Cam Peel, swimming in his first individual event at his first NCAA Championships, also moved up from his seed to finish 16th (19.44), earning an All-America Honorable Mention. Two others swam in preliminaries: sophomore River Wright in 36th (19.73) and junior Will Chan in 46th (20.05).
Borges, Peel, Wright and freshman James LeBuke combined on a 14th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:16.89). Borges recorded the fastest split (19.11), while LeBuke, a freshman only at the meet for this one relay, split 19.18.
Junior Patrick Callan picked up a few points in the consolation final of the 500-yard freestyle, moving up two spots from his seed to take 13th (4:13.49). Three others swam in the morning's preliminaries, including freshman Jake Mitchell (28th, 4:17.57), sophomore Danny Berlitz (40th, 4:20.05) and senior Will Roberts (50th, 4:22.71).
The Wolverines had one swimmer in the 200-yard IM. Junior Jared Daigle finished 37th (1:45.45).
Michigan ended the evening with a podium finish, taking sixth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:04.00). Freshman Wyatt Davis led off in 46.18, followed by Chan on breaststroke (50.95), Wright on butterfly (45.21) and Borges on freestyle (41.66).
The NCAA Championships continue Friday (March 26) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 6 p.m. Both events will be streamed live on ESPN3.
