TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Posting the third-lowest team tally of the final round, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 295 and moved up a spot to finish third Sunday (Feb. 28) with an 896 total at the Florida State Match Up at the Seminole Legacy Golf Course. The Wolverines returned this weekend to tournament play after nearly a full calendar year away.
Opening the first two days of the three-day event with team totals of 300 and 301, the Wolverines were among the top five of the 14-team field over the entire 54 holes. With U-M carding a 73 (+1) from junior Ashley Lau and three 74s (+2) from sophomore Hailey Borja, freshman Monet Chun and senior Ashley Kim, the Wolverines posted the third-lowest tally of the final round to move into third with an 896 54-hole total
Borja paced the Maize and Blue for the second time in her career as she posted her third career top-10 finish, and her 222 (72-76-74) total placed her in a tie for ninth. She finished with 35 pars in 54 holes. In her collegiate debut, Chun used a team-best nine birdies to post her first career top-15 individual finish as she tied for 12th with a 223 (75-74-74).
U-M placed three among the top 20 after Lau's final-round 73 (+1) helped her move up 10 spots to tie for 18th at 224 (76-75-73). She posted another consistent performance, closing with 33 pars and eight birdies. Kim helped give the Michigan four starters among the top 30 in the 75-player field, tying for 28th at 228 (78-76-74).
"We were thrilled to be competing again as a team," said U-M coach Jan Dowling. "For a few of our players, it's been almost a year since they've been able to play in an event. The approach shots and green complexes were really tough on this course as well as the wind and pin positions. To handle it so well in our first event back in quite some time is something we are all very proud of. Our feel around the greens will only get better as the season progresses. We feel so grateful to be competing for the Maize and Blue again."
The Wolverines will head to the College of Charleston's Briar Creek Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, March 15-16, at the Golf Club of Briar's Creek in John's Island, S.C. It was nearly a year ago that U-M was headed to this event prior to the remainder of last season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
