Michigan Sweeps Singles to Defeat Minnesota

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team swept all six singles matches to earn a 6-1 victory over Minnesota on Sunday (Feb. 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Minnesota took the doubles point with an upset win at No. 1 as Minnesota's Vlad Loback and Siim Troost defetaed No. 2 Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar, 7-5, in a tiebreaker a 7-6 win. Neither duo led by more than one point in the match until Minnesota led, 4-2, in the tiebreaker. Fenty and Siimar won the next two points to make it 4-4 before Minnesota won the next two to take a 6-4 edge. Michigan held them off with a win in the next game before Loback and Troost took the match. It handed the U-N duo its first setback of the season and snapped a six-match win streak.
Connor Johnston and Kristofer Siimar cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Sebastian Vile and Jackson Allen. They won the four points for their first victory and appearance as a pair this season.
Ondrej Styler and Nick Beaty fell behind, 4-0, at No. 2 doubles. They went on a three-point run to come within one to cut their deficit to 4-3, but the teams split the final two points with Daniel Martin and Bodon Zarkovic taking the match, 6-4.
Beaty evened the team score at 1 with Michigan's first singles win, taking No. 5 from Vile, 6-3, 6-4, to bring his win streak to seven. At No. 4, Mattias Siimar pushed the Wolverines ahead, 2-1, with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Lobak at No. 3 for Siimar's second win of the weekend.
Patrick Maloney won 6-3, 6-4 against Troost at No. 3 for his first singles victory of the season.
Styler clinched the match as the No. 28-ranked singles player won 6-4, 7-5 over Dylan Heap. With the win, Styler is 3-1 in dual play.
Jacob Bickersteth battled after a 6-2 setback in the first set to take down Martin, 6-3, in the second set. It was all Bickersteth in the third set, cruising to a 4-1 lead before splitting the next four points in 6-3 final.
No. 14-ranked Fenty cruised to a 6-2 win in the first set at No. 1 singles, before Jackson Allen responded with a 6-2 second set. In the third set, Fenty grabbed a 4-1 lead before they split two points apiece and Fenty earned a 6-3 win. Fenty has won his last four matches and improved to 3-0 in dual play.
Michigan will head to Indiana next weekend for matches against Indiana on Saturday (Feb. 27) at noon and Purdue on Sunday (Feb. 28) at noon.
