MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team put five swimmers and two divers into championship finals on the second day of the Minnesota Invitational on Thursday (Dec. 2) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Michigan showcased its speed in both the sprint and distance freestyle events on Thursday, putting two swimmers in each of the 200-yard IM and 50-yard freestyle. Senior Patrick Callan finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:12.60), a time that earns an NCAA 'B' cut.
Two other swimmers posted impressive performances in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Jake Mitchell finished ninth (4:14.58), also hitting the 'B' cut. Senior Bora Unalmis got under the NCAA 'B' cut time with his second swim, establishing a new career best (4:19.39) in the process.
Two sprinters went under the 20-second barrier in the 50-yard freestyle, led by sophomore Bence Szabados, who finished fifth (19.39) in the championship heat, and junior Cam Peel, who finished just behind his teammate (19.48) in sixth.
Freshman Gal Groumi led the way in the 200-yard IM, finishing third (1:41.99) with the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this season. Senior Jared Daigle joined him in the top 12 with a fifth-place finish (1:43.83). Both swimmers picked up NCAA 'B' cuts.
The Wolverines closed out the session with a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome of sophomore Wyatt Davis, senior Will Chan, Groumi and Peel turned in an NCAA 'A' cut time of 3:05.11.
In the diving well, senior Ross Todd claimed top honors in the three-meter springboard, scoring 389.95, and earned an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying score. The Wolverines' other finalist was freshman Kameron Liberman, who took eighth (301.50).
The Minnesota Invite continues Friday (Dec. 3) with day-three preliminaries starting 10 a.m. CST and finals at 6 p.m.
