Wolverines Wallop Scarlet Knights in Straight Sets

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team made quick work of Rutgers on Saturday night (Nov. 13), disposing the Scarlet Knights in straight sets (25-9, 25-10, 25-15) in front of a loud crowd in Cliff Keen Arena.
Sophomore Jess Mruzik led the Wolverines with 10 kills and seven digs while junior Jess Robinson registered eight kills and four blocks (one solo block, three block assists). Sophomore setter Scottee Johnson had 22 assists, six digs, five kills and two service aces, while fellow sophomore Brooke Humphrey had a career-high four aces in addition to a career-best six digs.
Michigan started the first set on a roll, winning eight of the first 10 points, led by two kills from senior Paige Jones and a service ace from junior May Pertofsky. Michigan continued to roll in the first, eventually defeating Rutgers on a service ace from redshirt sophomore Hannah Grant to take the first set by a score of 25-9. U-M finished with an outstanding .667 hitting percentage in the first set, compiling 14 kills and just two errors on 18 swings.
The Wolverines led the second set from start to finish. Robison earned the first point of the set with a kill and Michigan went on to win 12 of the first 15 points. The Maize and Blue went on to win the second set by a score of 25-10, once again hitting north of .600 with a .632 (13-1-19) attack percentage.
The third set was more of a battle between the Wolverines and the Scarlet Knights as they split the first eight points. Michigan found its form and took a lead of 17-7 with back-to-back aces from Johnson highlighting a 5-0 run. Rutgers mounted a small comeback, but it was not enough and U-M defeated the Scarlet Knights 25-15 in the third set with a kill from freshman Jacque Boney to end the match.
Michigan had a .380 attack percentage over the course of the match, while holding Rutgers to -.039. Both Johnson (5-0-5) and Pertofsky (3-0-3) were perfect with attacks on the night. The Wolverines had a total of eight blocks as a team compared to the Scarlet Knights' three, and also led the visitors in kills (38-15), digs (37-16), assists (36-15) and aces (9-2).
The Wolverines move to a perfect 9-0 against Rutgers in the all-time series.
Michigan will return to the road for a Friday (Nov. 19) match at No. 9-ranked Purdue at 7 p.m.
