ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking first set to No. 9 Ohio State and never recovered, falling in straight sets to the Buckeyes (31-33, 18-25, 17-25) on Friday night (Oct. 29) in front of 3,938 in Crisler Center.
Senior Paige Jones topped all players with 14 kills in the match, while sophomore Jess Mruzik added 12 kills while hitting .308 and putting up seven digs. Redshirt sophomore libero Hannah Grant had 12 digs and an ace, and sophomore setter Scottee Johnson distributed 30 assists.
The match's momentum was determined in the first set, as the Buckeyes withstood multiple set-point opportunities from the Wolverines to come out on top 33-31. U-M had two chances to take the opening set at 25-24 and 26-25, but committed service errors on each instance and saw OSU take control of the match from there.
Set two was tight in the early going, with the two sides squared at 16. Ohio State then went on a 6-0 run and Michigan could not recover with a run of their own, falling 25-18.
The third set followed a similar script, as U-M and OSU were knotted at 14 midway through. A quick 4-0 run by the Buckeyes put separation between the two, and the Wolverines were only able to earn three points the rest of the way as the match ended with a 25-17 final.
U-M hit .203 in the match compared to OSU's .310, while the Buckeyes also held the advantage in blocks (8-7), assists (48-37) and digs (55-39). Both squads finished with three service aces, while Michigan committed 12 service errors compared to Ohio State's five.
The Wolverines return to action Saturday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena for Halloween at Keen. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes and trick-or-treat on the court after the match.
