
Wolverines Roll to Midweek Road Sweep at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team cruised to a sweep (25-22, 25-9, 25-21) of Indiana on Wednesday night (Oct. 20) behind an impressive offensive performance in midweek Big Ten Conference action in Wilkinson Hall.
Senior Paige Jones paced a well-balanced attack for the Wolverines, finishing with 13 kills while hitting .500 (13-0-26) in the match. Jones also added three service aces, five digs and a block. Joining Jones with double-digit kills was sophomore Jess Mruzik, who had 11, while hitting .385 and putting up eight digs. Junior May Pertofsky tallied 10 kills and hit an impressive .533. Sophomore setter Scottee Johnson orchestrated the dominant U-M attack, finishing with 34 assists en route to a .392 Wolverines attack percentage.
Michigan held control of the match from the beginning, allowing Indiana to hit just .108 in the first set. While the Hoosiers kept the match close, the Wolverines won five of the final eight points to turn a 20-19 advantage into a 25-22 set final.
The Wolverines turned things up a notch in the second set, hitting .583 as a team, while Pertofksy led the way with five kills, jumping ahead in the match 2-0 thanks to a 25-9 victory. U-M once again stifled the IU offense, as the Hoosiers hit just .143 in the set. Michigan also registered five service aces and had three total blocks in the dominating performance.
U-M and IU locked in a close battle in the final set of the night, but Michigan was able to pull away late once again to secure the sweep with a 25-21 win. Though allowing Indiana to hit .308 in the final set, Michigan countered with a .444 performance of their own. Jones led the attack in the third, collecting eight of her 13 kills in the set.
After a close opening frame, the Wolverines dominated action, hitting .392 for the match compared to the Hoosiers' .196. U-M also won the blocking battle (7-3), had more service aces (8-2), collected more digs (46-38) and had more assists (39-32).
Defensively, redshirt sophomore libero Hannah Grant led all players with 14 digs, while Johnson, Mruzik and sophomore Kendall Murray each added eight. The trio of Pertofsky, freshman Jacque Boney and junior Jess Robinson each finished with three total blocks.
U-M continues its road swing with a Saturday afternoon (Oct. 23) showdown at Illinois. The Wolverines and Illini are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CDT at Huff Hall.
