FORT MYERS, Fla. -- After 10 months and 10 days away from competition, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed its training trip in the Sunshine State by defeating Florida Gulf Coast, 289-322, in a friendly match today (Monday, Jan. 18) at the Club at Renaissance.
As women's golf teams around the nation continue to prep for the spring season, the Wolverines took advantage of the opportunity to get in some training in Florida as well as some competition. Rather than playing in a match play style event, due to COVID-19 protocols the format was altered to play as teams in a six-count-four format.
Compiling four birdies and a match-best 13 pars, sophomore Hailey Borja led the Wolverines, tying her career low with a 69 (-3) for the only sub-par round of the day. She was followed by freshman Monet Chun, whose 73 (+1) featured an event-best five birdies, while junior Ashley Lau matched that tally with her 73. Sophomore Mikaela Schulz used 11 pars to card a 74, while senior Ashley Kim finished with a 76.
The Wolverines will get back to regular tournament action Feb. 7-9 when the heading back to Florida for Purdue's Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate at the Founders Golf Club in Sarasota. In addition to the collegiate event, the event will be offering the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund scramble for families and alumni of competing schools. It intended to help raise money for those Army Ranger families whose loved ones gave the ultimate sacrifice or who endured life-changing injuries.
