ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team continued action on the second day of the Michigan Invitational on Sunday (Jan. 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M squared off against Wisconsin on the doubles court and Northwestern in singles action.
U-M was once again strong on the doubles court, taking three of four matches from Wisconsin.
The duo of senior Alyvia Jones and sophomore Andrea Cerdan raced out to a 5-0 lead on Nastasya Semenovski and Anna Makarova. The Wisconsin pair answered with three straight games before U-M held on and broke Wisconsin in the final game for a 6-3 win.
On serve at 2-1 on court No. 4, senior Bella Lorenzini and freshman Kari Miller won two straight in the middle stages to grab a 4-1 lead. That was all the space the Michigan needed as Miller and Lorenzini wrapped up a 6-2 win for their second victory of the weekend.
Michigan's final win came courtesy of graduate student Chiara Lommer and freshman Jaedan Brown. The Wolverines broke late for a 5-4 lead but Wisconsin was able to answer right back to tie the score at 5. U-M was down, 15-30, in the ensuing game but won the final three points to send Lommer back to the line with a chance to win it. Michigan raced out to a 40-0 lead and converted on its second match point to wrap up the 7-5 win.
U-M played eight singles matches against Northwestern, going 6-2 against the Wildcats.
Cerdan was the first Wolverine off court, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Caroline Pozo.
Miller moved her singles record to 2-0 on the young season with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Clarissa Hand. The first set was on serve with Miller leading, 4-3, when she broke Hand in the next game before serving out the set for the 6-3 win. It was all Miller in the second as she cruised to a 6-1 win. Miller won nine of the match's final 10 games to record the straight-set win.
Freshman Merri Kelly won her second match of the weekend, dispatching of Inci Ogut in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore Nicole Hammond came away with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Hannah McColgan. Hammond rallied after being down in the first to take the win. In the second, Hammond broke McColgan for a 6-5 lead before serving it out in the next game for her second win of the weekend.
Brown pulled out a three-set win over Briana Crowley, coming away with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Brown found herself in a 2-0 hole to start the match before getting it back on serve at 3-3. Both players held over the next several games before Brown came away with the break of serve in the final game. She jumped out to a 30-0 lead and never looked back as Crowley double-faulted on match point.
Freshman Gala Mesochoritou finished Michigan's day on a high note, pulling out a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2 win over Hand. Mesochoritou's rally in the first set came up short as she came back from a 3-5 deficit to tie the set at 5, only to drop the set in the breaker. She came through on the deuce point with the second set tied 5-5, breaking Hand for a 6-5 lead. She served the next game out at love to force the third.
It was all Mesochoritou in the third as she raced out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back in a 6-2 victory.
U-M wraps up action at the Michigan Invitational Monday (Jan. 18), first playing doubles against Northwestern at noon. The Wolverines will face Ohio State in singles following the completion of doubles.
