
Five Michigan Swimmers Named to 2020-21 US National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Five current or former members of the University of Michigan swimming and diving program were named to the 2020-21 U.S. National Team on Wednesday (Aug. 19). The National Team members include senior Sierra Schmidt, freshman Jake Mitchell and alums Gabby DeLoof (2015-18), Miles Smachlo (2017-20) and Charlie Swanson (2017-20).
The 2020-21 USA Swimming National Team is comprised of returning 2019-2020 National Team members and athletes that achieved a performance faster than the sixth-place time on the 2019-20 roster before March 17, 2020. Benefits offered to USA Swimming National Team members include travel to USA Swimming TYR Pro Swim Series meets and training camp opportunities.
Schmidt is on the roster for the 800- and 1500-meter freestyles. She won two medals at the 2019 World University Games: a gold medal as part of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay and a bronze in the 400-meter freestyle. Schmidt went on to win three more medals at the 2019 Phillips 66 National Championships, including silver in the 800-meter freestyle. On the NCAA level, Schmidt is a four-time CSCAA All-American.
Mitchell, an incoming freshman from Carmel, Ind., is on the roster for the 400 and 800-meter freestyles. He represented the United States at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships, winning gold on the 4x200-meter freestyle relay and made finals in three other events, including a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle. At the 2019 Phillips 66 National Championships, Mitchell was runner-up in the 400-meter freestyle and finished fifth in the 1,500-meter freestyle and eighth in the 800-meter freestyle.
DeLoof is on the roster for the 200-meter freestyle. She won six medals last summer in international competitions, claiming five gold medals at the 2019 World University Games before winning a silver medal on the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the 2019 FINA World Championships.
Smachlo is on the roster for the 200-meter butterfly. He won a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2019 Phillips 66 National Championships (1:55.94). Smachlo was a six-time CSCAA All-American and three-time Big Ten champion, finishing his collegiate career with back-to-back conference titles in the 100-yard butterfly.
Swanson is on the roster for the 400-meter IM. He won gold in the 400-meter IM at the 2019 Pan American Games, posting the seventh-fastest time in history (4:11.46). Swanson was a five-time CSCAA All-American and five-time Big Ten champion, winning four straight conference titles in the 400-yard IM.
