Twelve Men's Swimmers Qualify for NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Twelve members of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team received individual qualifying berths to the NCAA Championships on Wednesday (March 11), per an official announcement from the NCAA. The Championships will take place March 25-28 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The team will be comprised of seniors Felix Auböck, Jeremy Babinet, Tommy Cope, Miles Smachlo, Charlie Swanson and Rob Zofchak; juniors Luiz Gustavo Borges, Will Roberts and Ricardo Vargas; sophomores Patrick Callan and Will Chan; and freshman Danny Berlitz. All five relays also qualified for the meet. Roberts and Zofchak are first-time qualifiers.
Divers can qualify based on finishes in all three events at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, held Thursday through Saturday (March 12-14) in Lexington, Kentucky.
Michigan has the fourth-most individual qualifiers, trailing Texas (18), California (14) and Florida (13). The Wolverines took 13th last year (99 points). Auböck was NCAA champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle and was one of three All-Americans alongside Smachlo (third in the 100-yard butterfly) and Vargas (fourth in the 500-yard freestyle). Five swimmers and two relay teams earned All-America Honorable Mention: Borges (50-yard freestyle), Callan (500-yard freestyle), Cope (400-yard IM, 200-yard breaststroke), Swanson (200-yard breaststroke), Vargas (400-yard IM), the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
