SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out the final day of the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational in style Saturday (Feb. 8) as they captured the meet-finale 4x400 relay with one of the fastest times in school history.
Not seeded fast enough to earn a spot in the fastest of three sections of the relay, the quartet of Emma Lane, Jade Harrison, Julia Hall and Chloe Foster nevertheless emerged from the second-fastest section with not just the best time of the day at 3:38.80 but also the fourth-best effort in program history.
The Wolverines took the win in their section by nearly four full seconds over Minnesota -- one of five conference rivals they topped with the performance. Wisconsin was runner-up at 3:40.82, followed by fourth-place Minnesota, fifth-place Iowa, eighth-place Indiana and 16th-place Ohio State.
Nationally, the performance ranks Michigan 17th among all schools.
The writing was on the wall for a quick relay performance after all four performed well in their individual 400-meter races.
Harrison, the indoor school-record-holder at 400 meters, made her 2020 debut in the event with a 54.65 effort that earned her fourth-place overall in the championship portion of the event and the win in her section.
In the section prior, Foster clocked 54.68 for fourth in her race and fifth overall.
History was made in the unseeded sections of the 400 meters earlier in the day, as Lane ran a career-best 54.95 to become just the seventh woman in school history to dip under 55 seconds in the event. She finished runner-up in the unseeded competition overall, with Hall not far behind in sixth with a season's best 55.51.
Between Harrison, Foster and Lane, this marked the first time in Michigan indoor history that three women have all run faster than 55 seconds in the same competition.
At double the distance, Michigan scored another top-five finish as Hill ran a career-best 2:07.42 to take fifth overall in the championship portion of the 800 meters. The time eclipsed her previous personal best of 2:08.57 by more than a full second and vaulted her up to No. 14 on the vaunted all-time U-M indoor 800 meters list.
Michigan got two more top-10 finishes in the unseeded events and non-finals as Julia Vanitvelt clocked a 9:52.65 over 3,000 meters -- 16 seconds better than her outdoor personal record at the same distance -- to finish fifth, and Michaiah Thomas was ninth in the 60-meter hurdles semifinals in 8.71.
The Wolverines will be back on the road next weekend, splitting the squad between the Vanderbilt Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Arkansas Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 14-15). The sprinters and jumpers will compete at Arkansas, while the throwers and distance runners are in action at Vanderbilt.
