CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team tied the match at 3-3, but No. 12-ranked Ohio State won the final match on court at No. 6 as Michigan dropped a 4-3 decision Saturday night (Feb. 8) in consolation action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the XS Center.
Michigan rallied for the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. The Wolverines and Buckeyes split the first two matches off court, Michigan taking a 6-4 win at No. 1 and OSU winning 6-2 at No. 2.
Michigan's No. 3 pair of junior Bella Lorenzini and sophomore Anca Craciun fell in a 4-1 hole before tying the match at 5-5. Michigan was broken on its serve, sending Ohio State back to the service line to serve out the match. U-M responded in kind, sending the match to a tiebreaker.
Ohio State took a 3-2 lead in the breaker, but it was all Michigan from there as Craciun and Lorenzini won the next five points to seal the win and put the first point on the board for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan won first sets at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4, but Ohio State was able to quickly even the score with a straight-set win at No. 2 as the first match off court.
OSU took its first lead of the night, 2-1, with a three-set win at No. 3.
Junior Alyvia Jones came through with a straight-set win at No. 4 to even the team score at 2-2. Jones came away with a 10-8 win in the first-set tiebreaker, breaking an 8-8 tie with two straight points for the win. Jones broke for a 3-1 advantage in the second set and did not look back, winning the ensuing three games for the 6-1 second-set victory.
The Buckeyes pulled ahead again with a three-set win at No. 1. In the third meeting of the year between senior Giulia Pairone and OSU's No. 8-ranked Shiori Fukuda, Ohio State came out on top. Pairone took the first set and Fukuda responded with a win in the second. Pairone was broken to start the third set but won two straight games to get back on serve. The set stayed on serve until Pairone was broken for a 5-4 Fukuda lead. Pairone fought off one match point but could not capitalize on the deuce point as Fukuda wrapped up a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
With Michigan needing to win the final two matches on court, senior Chiara Lommer was on serve in the third set and Lorenzini was wrapping up a win in the second set to send her match to a third.
Lommer and Irina Cantos Siemers exchanged three straight breaks of serve in the late stages of the third, with Cantos Siemers taking a 6-5 lead back to the service line. Lommer fought off two match points to send the set to a tiebreaker. It was all Lommer in the breaker as she rolled to a 7-2 win for the 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory for Michigan's third point.
Lorenzini fell in a 5-2 hole in the third set but won two straight games, while fighting off a pair of match points, to get back on serve at 4-5. She grabbed a 40-30 lead on her serve in the next game, but OSU's Luna Dormet won the next two points to wrap up the 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win. Lorenzini forced a third set after erasing a 3-0 deficit in the second set, winning 6-4 to set up the final frame.
Michigan will wrap up action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Sunday (Feb. 9) against Illinois at 6:30 p.m. CST.
