
Michigan Falls Late Against No. 19 Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team tied the game with 3:00 left, but No. 19-ranked Northwestern scored the final six points of the contest in a 66-60 Wildcat win Thursday (Feb. 13) at Crisler Center.
Junior Hailey Brown hit a triple on the right wing with an even 3:00 to go, evening the score at 60 to force a Northwestern timeout. Northwestern hit a triple with just five seconds left on the shot clock after the timeout to regain a 63-60 lead with 2:35 to go.
Brown missed a triple the next time down, but the Wolverines got a stop on the defensive end to get the ball back. Michigan's first attempt on the possession was off but the Wolverines were able to corral the offensive rebound before being called for traveling.
NU turned the ball over on its next possession, but Michigan was unable to convert on a fastbreak layup but once again grabbed an offensive board. Michigan called timeout but could not get a shot to fall and was forced foul. Northwestern went 3-for-4 from the line over the final seven seconds to seal a five-point win.
Senior Akienreh Johnson led the way for the Maize and Blue, going for 15 points and nine rebounds. Brown chipped in 12 points and five boards, with sophomore Amy Dilk turning in 12 points and six assists. Sophomore Naz Hillmon was limited to 15 minutes due to injury, going for eight points and two boards.
Michigan took a back-and-forth first quarter, leading, 19-18, after 10 minutes.
The Wolverines used a 7-0 run to start the second quarter on a jumper from Johnson, triple from Brown and layup from Hillmon for a 26-18 lead with 6:28 left to force a Northwestern timeout.
Michigan took a 35-30 lead at the half after Brown hit a triple on Michigan's final possession.
Northwestern used an 8-0 run over the middle stages of the third quarter to take a 46-43 lead on a triple in transition, forcing a Michigan timeout with 3:30 left in the period.
U-M countered with a four-point trip, with freshman Izabel Varejão making one free throw and Brown grabbing the rebound on the second. She found Dilk for a triple at the top of the key, pushing Michigan back in front, 47-46, at the 2:57 mark.
Northwestern countered again with a 7-0 spurt before Dilk found Varejão for a layup to pull within four, but NU made good on a pair of free throws to head to the fourth with a 55-49 lead.
Michigan slowly chipped away in the fourth, closing within three points, 59-56, on a coast-to-coast layup from Johnson with 6:03 to go before Brown's heroics at the three-minute mark.
Michigan will hit the road this weekend, traveling to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights on Sunday (Feb. 16) at noon. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
