Nine current University of Michigan swimmers raced at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open, held last Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 12-14) at nine different sites across the country. Also in action were two alums and five recently-announced signees who will be on campus next fall. To determine winners, USA Swimming compiled the results from all nine sites. Every event was in long course (meters).
Here are some notable performances from the meet:
• Junior Patrick Callan came close to breaking the school record in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing second (1:47.38). The current school record is 1:47.25, set by Olympic medalist Peter Vanderkaay in 2005. Callan was third in the 400-meter freestyle (3:49.34).
• Another silver medalist was junior Olivia Carter, who took second in the 200-meter butterfly (2:10.52). She finished 10th in the 100-meter butterfly (59.77).
• Freshmen Wyatt Davis and Jake Mitchell continued their strong string of performances. Mitchell had three top-eight times, finishing sixth in both the 200-meter freestyle (1:49.46) and 400-meter freestyle (3:52.98), and eighth in the 800-meter freestyle (8:03.11). Davis put up two top-five performances, finishing third in the 200-meter backstroke (2:00.30) and fifth in the 100-meter backstroke (55.37).
• Junior Maggie MacNeil recorded two top-10 finishes, including a fourth-place showing in the 100-meter butterfly (57.75). She came within one-tenth of a second of setting a school record in the 50-meter freestyle, finishing seventh (25.40). The current record is held by Catie DeLoof (25.31, 2018).
• The program announced its 2021-22 signing class last week on social media, and though they will not be on campus until next fall, the future looks bright. Connor Hunt (Ridgefield, Conn.) was fifth in the 1,500-meter freestyle (15:32.66), Lindsay Flynn (Matthews, N.C.) was sixth in the 50-meter freestyle (25.37) and Letitia Sim (Spanish Fort, Ala.) was 11th in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:33.34).
• Two Michigan alums (and current U.S. National Team members) had positive outings. Miles Smachlo (2017-20) picked up two medals, finishing second in the 100-meter butterfly (52.54) and third in the 200-meter butterfly (1:58.51), while Gabby DeLoof (2015-18) was 10th in the 200-meter freestyle (2:00.72).
