ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Will Lockwood's late third-period goal lifted the University of Michigan ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over No. 11-ranked Ohio State on Friday night (Jan. 31) at Yost Ice Arena.
Just minutes into the game, Jimmy Lambert appeared to have the Wolverines off to a 1-0 lead off a tic-tac-toe play, but video review determined that a Michigan player was offsides entering the zone and negated the goal.
But any momentum created by the Wolverines early on was not lost, as the Wolverines lit the lamp once again minutes later. After a couple of redirections off a shot from the high point, the puck found its way to Jack Becker, who then ripped a low-level shot. Although it was initially saved by a flash of OSU goalie Tommy Nappier's pad, the rebound was slammed home by Michael Pastujov, his third of the season. Becker and Luke Martin were credited with assists at the 14:26 mark of the opening frame.
Michael Pastujov's goal was the only one of the period, but Michigan was in control outshooting its rival, 16-7, before a standing-room-only crowd.
The Buckeyes drew a tripping minor early in the second which gave them their first power play of the night. With seven seconds remaining on the man-advantage, Ohio State scored when a pass intended for a weak-side winger was deflected into the goal.
After the Wolverines were whistled for hooking, Ohio State was called for interference 44 seconds later to set up a 4-on-4. Ohio State's penalty put the ensuing draw into its own territory. Cam York, off an offensive zone faceoff win, made his way around the top of the circle and being patient, faked a shot to force the pursing defenseman to drop to a knee giving him enough room for a clear shot to wrist a bullet past Nappier. The goal came at 18:03, and the lone assist was supplied by Lambert.
The Maize and Blue headed into the second intermission holding a 2-1 advantage.
Midway through the third period, Michigan was given its fifth trip to the sin bin resulting in another Ohio State power play. Working the puck around the ice, the Buckeyes found an open skater in the high slot who then rifled a shot past the glove of Strauss Mann and knotting the game at 2.
Captain Lockwood became the hero late in the third period. With under four minutes remaining in the game, Lockwood started the play by blocking a shot and leading the rush down the ice. After dropping the puck to a supporting forward, the puck was thrown on net but padded by Nappier. The puck trickled back Lockwood's stick, and he skated with it around to the far post and tucked it past the sprawling pad of Nappier giving Michigan a 3-2 lead with just 3:43 remaining. Jake Slaker picked up the lone assist on the goal.
Ohio State brought an extra attacker onto the ice and left its net vacant for 2:08. The Buckeyes applied pressure but fell short in finding the back of the net, but the Wolverines shut the door on OSU to run their unbeaten streak to five regular-season games.
Michigan and Ohio State will face off again Saturday (Feb. 1) in the series finale at Yost Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
