ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team concluded action at the three-day Michigan Invitational with five singles wins Sunday (Jan. 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The final day of the tournament was altered slightly due to player availability, with only singles taking place.
Junior Alyvia Jones put the finishing touches on a 3-0 weekend behind a three-set win over Tennessee's Hadley Doyle. Jones got on the board first, grinding out a 7-6 win in the first set. She went up a break at 4-2 in the second, but Doyle ripped off four straight games to send it to a 10-point breaker for the third set. Jones used a fast start for a 5-2 lead in the breaker, eventually grabbing a pair of match points at 9-7. She came through on the second to wrap up a 7-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) victory.
Junior Bella Lorenzini won her second straight match, knocking off Tennessee's Julie Ball in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). Lorenzini used fast starts in both sets en route to the win.
Freshman Nicole Hammond bounced back with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Callie Creath of Tennessee to finish with a 1-1 singles record on the weekend after not competing on the first day.
Sophomore Anca Craciun won her second straight match, taking a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 win over Tenika McGiffin of Tennessee. Craciun took control of the third set in the middle of it, winning the final four games to take the match.
Senior Giulia Pairone gave Michigan its fifth singles win of the afternoon with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 victory over TCU's Stevie Kennedy. After Pairone dropped the first set, she won the first three games of the second en route to a 6-2 win. It was all Michigan in the third and final set as Pairone came through on two deuce points to keep Kennedy off the board in a 6-0 win.
Michigan begins the dual-match portion of the season next weekend (Jan. 25-26), hosting the ITA Kick-Off at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M will be joined by Mississippi, UCF and Utah with a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on the line. The Wolverines will first face Mississippi on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 11 a.m.
