ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team resumed action Friday (Jan. 17), hosting the first day of the Michigan Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan swept three doubles matches from TCU, using fast starts on all three courts to record the wins. Seniors Giulia Pairone and Chiara Lommer raced out to a 6-1 win as the first team off court. The duo grabbed an early 2-0 and never looked back in the match.
It was much of the same for junior Bella Lorenzini and freshman Nicole Hammond, who also used an early break for a 2-0 lead en route to a 6-2 win.
Freshman Andrea Cerdan and junior Alyvia Jones picked up Michigan's final doubles win of the afternoon, breaking in the final game for a 6-4 win. The Wolverine twosome came through on the deuce point, their third match point.
Cerdan was the first Wolverine off court as Michigan faced off against Ohio State in singles. The freshman came away with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Isabelle Boulais for her ninth win of the season.
Senior Lera Patiuk was the next victorious Wolverine, grabbing a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Kathleen Jones. Patiuk fell in an early hole in the second-set tiebreaker and could not recover, sending the match to a third set. It was all Michigan in the final frame as Patiuk went up, 3-0, to take control in the victory.
Jones rallied from a slow start to record a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win over Danielle Wolf. Jones dropped the first five games before winning the next seven to take the first set. She jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set, but Wolf answered right back by winning six of the next seven games to send the match to a third. Both players stayed on serve in the final set before Jones broke Wolf in the final game for a 6-4 win. Jones had a pair of match points, coming through on the deuce point after Wolf double-faulted.
U-M will continue action at the Michigan Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 18), first playing doubles against Ohio State at 1 p.m. The Wolverines will face Tennessee in singles following the completion of doubles.
