ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer finished its four-match homestand with a closely-contested 1-0 loss to No. 13 Washington on Sunday (Sept. 8) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines came in having scored three goals in each of its three matches to start the season, but could not find a breakthrough Sunday despite holding a 10-7 edge in shots (nine in the second half) and accounting for nearly 60 percent of the possession.
The Huskies found the match's only goal in the 51st minute through Kasey French. U-M engineered a fantastic response eight minutes later, when it fired two shots in quick succession. Freshman Christian Pulselli, who earned his first career start, had his shot blocked, though the ball ricocheted out to junior Umar Farouk Osman. His follow-up was spoiled by Washington goalkeeper Bryce Logan and went out for a corner kick, though that was cleared away by the UW defense.
The Wolverines looked dangerous again in the 65th minute. Pulselli used his speed and broke in off the right flank, but Logan did well to make the save. Two minutes later, graduate student Nebojsa Popovic had an opportunity of his own, but Logan again was there for the save.
The team's last chance came in the 81st minute from senior Jack Hallahan. His long-range shot bent in, took a deflection off a Washington defender and bounced off the post before being cleared away for a corner. The Wolverines could not get closer the rest of the half and Washington held on for the win.
Senior Andrew Verdi started once again in net and made one save. Logan made five saves, including four in the second half.
The Wolverines will hit the road for the first time for a Friday (Sept. 13) matchup against Omaha. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CDT.
