STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team took home a point in its first Big Ten road contest of the season as it played Penn State to a scoreless draw on Friday (Sept. 27) at Jeffrey Field.
The Wolverines extended their unbeaten run to four matches (1-0-3) after they earned a hard-fought point against a Nittany Lions squad that came into the match ranked No. 4 in the RPI and had the eighth-best strength of schedule in the nation.
The Wolverines got off to a fantastic start, firing five shots on goal in the first 20 minutes. In the 15th minute, junior Joel Harrison -- who re-entered the starting lineup after a three-match absence -- headed one to the center of the box off a corner kick that found graduate student Nebojsa Popovic. He one-timed it with his right foot, but it was struck right to Penn State goalkeeper Josh Levine.
Three minutes later, junior Jackson Ragen played a ball up field for Popovic, who brought it to the right edge of the box. He rifled a shot to the top-right corner, but Levine got a hand to it and deflected it out for a corner. One minute later, senior Jack Hallahan ran up the right side and sent in service to junior Umar Farouk Osman, who was left unmarked in the box. Osman's header missed the frame and ended the threat. The teams were scoreless at halftime.
As the match got more open, both sides had quality chances in the second half. In the 53rd minute, sophomore Derick Broche got off a dipping left-footed shot in the run of play, but Levine dove to his right and got fingertips on it. In the 67th minute, Hallahan kept the ball between two defenders and shot a left-footed strike, but Levine again got a fingertip on it for the save.
Two minutes later, the Nittany Lions had their best chance of the night, but Christian Sload hit the right post. In the 84th minute, Callum Pritchatt got a header off at the center of the box, but it skimmed just wide of the net. The teams were scoreless at the end of 90 minutes and the game went to overtime.
The Wolverines went up a man in the 94th minute when Sload was shown a red card after a video review appeared to show him punching junior Austin Swiech in the midsection. Despite the advantage, U-M was unable get a shot on frame, and the match ended in a scoreless draw.
The Wolverines will back in action Wednesday (Oct. 2), when they will face rival Ohio State in Columbus. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
