NEW ORLEANS, La. -- A program-record 10 women from the University of Michigan track and field team were recognized Monday (July 22) for their accomplishments in both athletics and academics with All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Eclipsing the previous program-best nine individual honorees from 2013 and 2018, the women's squad as a whole performed well enough to earn a collective team All-Academic plaudit for the eighth year in a row with a cumulative 3.22 grade-point average under head coaches James Henry and Jerry Clayton.
Leading the way was graduate student Erin Finn, who claimed her sixth career All-Academic honor just over a month after she wrapped up her decorated career with second team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Finn has been able to claim six awards over her five years at Michigan because the award can be earned for the indoor and/or outdoor seasons. Having been forced by injury to miss either the indoor or outdoor seasons multiple years -- but never both in the same year -- and consequently being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, she was eligible all six years.
Joining her on the list were All-Americans Meg Darmofal, Alice Hill, Hannah Meier and Aurora Rynda, as well as Bailey Baker, Camille Davre, Micaela DeGenero, Anne Forsyth and Megan Worrel.
This is the first career honor for all but Meier, who also earned this award in 2018.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and have met one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Two among the group claimed Big Ten titles in 2019, with Meier taking the crown in the indoor mile and Rynda claiming the indoor 600-meter title. Honorees also combined to break three school records: Baker in the hammer throw, Meier in the indoor mile and the trio of Darmofal, Hill and Rynda as part of the indoor distance medley relay.
The distance medley relay team also earned a Big Ten Indoor Championships silver medal.
Nationally, 902 women from 198 different institutions earned the individual award. Michigan was one of 219 programs nationally to earn team All-Academic honors.
