TEMPE, Ariz. -- Seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis team capped their stellar careers by earning All-America honors by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Fahey picked up singles and doubles honors, with Minor earning a doubles nod.
Fahey becomes the third Wolverine to earn both singles and doubles distinctions in the same season, joining Minor (2016) and Denise Muresan (2011). Fahey ended the season ranked No. 3 in singles after compiling a 38-6 overall record, including a 21-1 record at the No. 1 spot in dual matches. Her No. 3 ranking is the highest season-ending ranking for a player in school history and just the third time a Wolverine has ended in the top-10. Fahey repeated as Big Ten Athlete of the Year and leaves Michigan as the winningest singles player of all-time (132).
Fahey and Minor earned doubles accolades after making a run to the championship match of the NCAA Doubles Championship. The duo entered the tournament ranked No. 37 before ripping off four straight wins to reach the final match. Fahey and Minor finished 24-4 as a doubles pair, highlighted by a 14-1 mark at No. 1. The Wolverines vaulted all the way up to No. 7 in the final rankings, marking the third top-10 finish for a doubles pair in school history.
Minor's doubles honor gives her four All-America citations for her career, the most by a Wolverine in program history. Fahey's double-dip moves her total to three, tying Muresan and Emina Bektas for second all-time.Â
The criteria for ITA All-America honors include earning a top 16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship or finishing in the top 20 of the final Oracle/ITA Singles Rankings. All-America recognition is awarded to doubles teams that earn a top-eight seed into the NCAA Championship, reach the NCAA Championship quarterfinals or finish in the top 10 in the final Oracle/ITA National Doubles Rankings.
