
McCallum Captures Third Vault Title, U-M Places Fourth at NCAA Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Senior Anthony McCallum of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team captured the third NCAA vault championship of his career to lead the Wolverines to a fourth-place team finish (406.354) at the 2019 NCAA Team and Individual Finals on Saturday (April 20) at State Farm Arena.
In all, McCallum, sophomores Jacob Moore and Cameron Bock, as well as senior Marty Strech all earned All-America honors.
With the NCAA title on vault, McCallum is the fifth NCAA vault title in program history. The win also puts him in elite company as the second three-time NCAA vault champion in the modern era of NCAA men's gymnastics, joining New Mexico's Chad Fox (1987-89).
Michigan (20-9) chose to begin the night on pommel horse again after finding success in Session I on Friday (April 19). U-M compiled a team score of 63.381 in the first rotation, with Moore and Bock leading the way with a 13.233. After one rotation, the Wolverines were in fifth place.
In the second rotation, U-M surpassed its season average with a 69.498, led by a massive 14.300 from Strech that resulted in a seventh-place finish to earn him the first All-America honor of his career. With a running score of 133.329, U-M moved into fourth place.
The third rotation continued Michigan's climb as the Maize & Blue had one of the most impressive rotations of the entire championship, scoring the second-highest score in the country on vault with a 73.264 to move up to third in the team standings. McCallum's Tsukahara double pike marked the top score in the NCAA with a 15.266, while Moore also earned All-America honors with a 14.566.
On parallel bars in the fourth rotation, U-M scored a 65.498 to compile a running score of 272.091. The Wolverines held their third-place standing behind Oklahoma (280.460) and Stanford (279.527) and were ahead of Nebraska (270.693).
Following a subpar 62.381 on high bar, U-M slid to fifth place and was 1.104 points behind Penn State and 5.836 points behind Nebraska. Â U-M headed to floor exercise while Penn State took to parallel bars and the Cornhuskers took to pommel horse.
In its final rotation, Michigan jumped past Penn State to move back into fourth place with an event total of 71.432, and were led by a third-place finish from Moore (14.700).
Bock earned a fourth-place finish in the all-around to secure the second All-America honor of his U-M career. He compiled an 82.464, highlighted by a pair of 12th-place finishes on floor exercise (14.366), and high bar (13.566)

Michigan closed out its 2019 campaign with a 20-9 overall record, a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships with four All-Americans and one individual national champion. The four All-Americans increase U-M's all-time total to 217.
