MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Senior/junior Myles Amine advanced to the 174-pound championship while seven more Wolverines are still alive in the consolation bracket as the University of Michigan wrestling team completed the first day of action at the Big Ten Championships in seventh place (62.5 points) on Saturday (March 9) at Minnesota's Williams Arena.
Amine, seeded second at 174 pounds, will face Penn State's top-ranked Mark Hall, a 2017 NCAA champion, in tomorrow's championship and a rematch of last season's Big Ten final.
Amine earned a pair of decision victories to get through the day unscathed, including a 6-5 decision over Purdue's third-seeded -- and 10th-ranked -- Dylan Lydy. Amine overcame an initial deficit after giving up a counter takedown early; he responded with single legs in the first and second frames and nearly added another at the final buzzer. Amine also earned a 6-1 decision against Wisconsin's Ryan Christensen behind three takedowns -- one in each period.
Amine was a bright spot in an otherwise tough evening session for the Wolverines, who dropped their other four semifinal bouts, including a medical forfeit by top-ranked senior/junior Stevan Micic, who will default to sixth place at 133 pounds.
Junior/sophomore Kanen Storr, seeded fourth at 141 pounds, dropped a 4-1 decision to Nebraska's eighth-seeded Chad Red, who knocked off the top seed in the quarterfinals, in his semifinal bout. Storr could not overcome an early deficit from a late first-period takedown and was ridden for a bulk of the third period to give Red an additional riding-time point. Storr did use late heroics to earn a 2-1 decision against Wisconsin's Tristan Moran in the quarterfinals. After getting ridden for much of the third, he scored a late reversal, ran off Moran's riding-time advantage and rode out the bout for the win.
Fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo, seeded fourth at 157 pounds, fell to Penn State's top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA champion Jason Nolf, 7-1, in the semifinals behind two takedowns and 2:07 in riding time. Pantaleo earned the Wolverines' most dominant win of the day in the first round, scoring 10 takedowns en route to a 21-8 major decision over Wisconsin's Garrett Model.
Senior/junior Logan Massa, seeded fifth at 165 pounds, also fell to a two-time NCAA champion in the semifinals after top-ranked Vincenzo Joseph put him in neutral danger before earning a fall at 6:41. It was just a one-point match at the time, with Joseph leading off a first-period takedown.
Massa avenged one of his season losses in the quarterfinals, rallying from a two-takedown deficit to defeat Nebraska's fourth-seeded -- and sixth-ranked -- Isaiah White, 8-6. Massa scored twice on the edge in the third period, added a stall point late, and rode out the bout to secure the comeback win.
The Wolverines also have sophomore Drew Mattin, fifth-year senior Malik Amine and freshman Mason Parris slotted into the seventh-place bouts at 125 and 149 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Mattin earned bonus points with a 13-3 major decision over Maryland's Brandon Cray in his opening bout, scoring two takedowns and six near-fall points, while Parris used three takedowns to earn an 8-5 decision over Maryland's Youssif Hemida, a 2018 NCAA All-American.
Amine rallied to a 5-3 win over Maryland's Alfred Bannister in his first wrestleback match after dropping a close 6-3 decision to Rutgers' top-ranked Anthony Ashnault. Amine scored a reversal to tie the score against Bannister, but it was waved off on review. Instead, he picked up a quick escape on the restart, countered a duck attempt for a late takedown, and rode out the bout to secure 1:15 riding-time advantage.
Six Wolverines -- Mattin, Micic, Storr, Pantaleo, Massa and Myles Amine -- have already earned an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships. Parris can secure one with a win in his seventh-place match tomorrow, while the remaining three will need an at-large selection.
Michigan will wrap up action at the Big Ten Championships tomorrow (Sunday, March 10) at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The third session is slated to begin at noon CDT, while the finals will start at 3 p.m. CDT and will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
